. . . I rented a jeep in indonesia to do a 10-day tour of the remote countryside. The rental company (some local outfit) barely looked at my Texas license and didn’t show any interest in the IDP I bought from AAA before I left on my trip. All they really did was photocopy my passport and demand cash payment in advance. When I asked what I should do if I was involved in an accident, the rental agent told me the police would likely find me at fault if it was serious, take me to the local police station and “fine” me $200 cash. He added that if I struck and killed a local, not to pay the family more than $50 in compensation. My immediate thought was, “Wow! Here I can afford to run over 10 of these m’fuckers!” Oh, and I wasn’t supposed to take the jeep on a ferry to any neighboring islands. It only took a $20 bribe to the cop on duty at the ferry terminal to get the jeep on the ferry to Bali. I simply folded up the bill, placed it inside my passport and handed it to him. The $20 bill was gone when he handed my passport back to me and off to Bali on the ferry we went. I wanted to go onward to Lomboc Island to check out the Komodo dragons, but the cop at the ferry terminal on Bali wasn’t as cooperative as the first one. He didn’t get upset or anything, but simply retuned my passport with the $20 still neatly folded inside and refused to allow the Jeep on the ferry. Maybe he was an honest cop, or maybe $20 wasn’t enough, I dunno. I didn’t want to push my luck.
