Sure we can all go to a tap and die chart, but that does not help the feller who has a 1-3/4-18 thread to deal with :-). Helps us with Metric too, an M6x1.0 thread will use a 5mm tap drill.
The average person might have to use a 17/64 .2656", but I'd encourage care to see that it does not drill big for all of the reasons a drill can cut oversize.
I'd rather see a 50% thread than a broken tap from trying to use .250 and cutting a 100% thread. The tap drill chart gives us roughly 80% threads.
5/8-18 is kind of a bitch because neither of the avail sizes actually gives 80%....in one past job 5/8-18 gave us a lot of problems producing threads good to gauge.
