Back in the old days before they invented machinery to pick cotton, plantation owners imported and selectively bred Africans to pick cotton. At least the Africans who were slow enough to get caught by the slavers and other Africans who sold them to the slavers.
Increased cotton production meant more cotton to process into fabric, which meant the textile mills in the north expanded. Bigger mills meant they needed more workers to operate the looms and other mill equipment.
There weren't enough warm bodies to do the jobs, so they attracted immigrants. Irish, Poles, and in New England there were huge numbers of French Canadians who moved south to work in the mills.
Growing up in a major textile mill town (large enough that the industrial area is now a US National Park) I gotta say that those French Canadians were some of the dumbest motherfuckers I have ever met in my life.
The need for cotton is what fucked up our culture. It filled the south full of slave descendants and the north full of French Canadian descendants.
