Me, my first Glock, and magazines

In April I treated myself to a birthday Glock. A used model 21 from the pawn shop, it came with one mag, a post-ban 10 rounder.
This mag has a spring that could launch boulders into my neighbor's yard. Had to get an UPLULA. But it functions perfectly.
Because a friend of mine has had good service with the Korean mags in his model 17, I got three (SGM Tactical) from Sportsman's Guide. They are marked "SHK Mag made in Korea".
Well, they work "okay" as range mags. One has had cartridges nose-dive on me a couple of times and looking them over I see that the springs are not as stiff as the factory Glock mags. These SGM mags are not drop-free either.
So I ordered some real Glock 13 rounders.
I doubt I'll use this big pig of a pistol as a carry piece, but if I ever need to, I want mags with it of unquestionable reliability.
I have always been in the habit of using the slide lock to drop the slide and strip the top round on a fresh magazine. Now I see YouTube videos of shooters with more skill and knowledge than I who do not use the slide lock, but pull back and release the slide to charge the pistol after loading.
Is there something about Glocks that make this a better procedure ? I'd hate to hurt my gun by doing it my old way if Glocks don't like it. I'm still learning the Glock system and how to grip it and get accustomed to a trigger pull different from anything I've used before.
Advice and coaching from the brain trust would be welcome.
